Australian Political Book of the Year Award 2024 shortlist announced
The shortlist for the 2024 Australian Political Book of the Year Award has been announced.
Shortlisted titles, selected from a longlist announced earlier this month, are:
- Quarterly Essay #93: Bad Cop: Peter Dutton’s Strongman Politics (Lech Blaine, Black Inc.)
- Donald Horne: A Life in the Lucky Country (Ryan Cropp, La Trobe)
- Killing for Country: A Family Story (David Marr, Black Inc.)
- Flawed Hero: Truth, Lies and War Crimes (Chris Masters, A&U).
Said judges Barrie Cassidy, Laura Tingle and John Warhurst: ‘These four books were all chosen because of their combination of dense and compelling storytelling and powerful writing, which reflects on the challenging times in which we live and the changing nature of the issues and conduct of our national political debates.’ They added: ‘These are four impeccably researched works, which give us new insights into issues of particular importance in 2024.’
Introduced in 2022, the award recognises the books the judges believe ‘provide the most compelling contribution to understanding Australian political events and debates’.
Each shortlisted author will receive $1000 in prize money. The winner, receiving $15,000 in prize money, will be announced on 20 November at the National Press Club in Canberra.
Last year’s prize was awarded to Niki Savva for her book Bulldozed (Scribe). More information about the award is available on the prize website.
