BookTok reprieve: TikTok restoring US accounts

In the US, TikTok has announced it has begun restoring access to the social media platform after incoming president Donald Trump indicated that one of his first acts will be to issue an executive order granting TikTok owner ByteDance more time to find a buyer of the platform.

Previously, the US Supreme Court had upheld a law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok by Sunday 19 January or face a ban in the US. The deadline passed without ByteDance divesting ownership – with many US Tiktok users subsequently reporting loss of access.

Trump stated he ‘would like the United States to have a 50 per cent ownership position in a joint venture’ with ByteDance, reported the Age.
