Bookshop.org turns 5, introduces ebooks
In the US, Bookshop.org has celebrated its fifth anniversary by introducing an ebook platform, available now.
Discussing the development, Bookshop founder and CEO Andy Hunter told the New York Times that adding ebooks to the site was a goal from its beginning. Wrote the New York Times: ‘Independent bookstores already had a way to sell digital audiobooks, through Libro.fm, but no one had found a good solution for digital books.’
‘Digitally inclined readers can directly support the bookstore of their choosing by ordering through Bookshop.org, ensuring the full profit goes to supporting that chosen store,’ Bookshop.org said in a statement. ‘Alternatively, profits from orders without a specified bookstore are distributed among all participating bookstores on the platform, further benefiting the literary community.’
Bookshop.org has reportedly earned more than US$35 million (A$56.8 million) for US independent bookstores since its launch in 2020, reported Publishing Perspectives.
