Crimson Light Polished Wood
Leonora, a British immigrant, falls in love with Margaret, a fellow female teacher who three years later dies of cancer. While still grieving for Margaret, Leonora meets and befriends Anna and her young family who live next door. Leonora has a strong influence on Anna’s daughter Lydia, introducing her to literature and art. This is a novel that explores aspects of inheritance, not only of property and possessions, but also of stories and culture, knowledge and pain. It has to do with identity, the need for recognition and intimacy and interrogates ideas of family and responsibilities beyond blood ties. Crimson Light Polished Wood is an exquisite work about art, gender, disappointment, understanding and ultimately celebration.
