Gone (Michel Streich, T&H)

Writer and illustrator Michel Streich tackles the sensitive subject of loss and the mysteries surrounding death in his accessible and poignant picture book, Gone. The story centres on a child who discovers that his pet bird has passed away during the night. After burying him, he begins to consider the universal question of where we go once we’re gone and speaks to his family members about their own beliefs. Through these reflections, the story delicately explores themes of mortality, the cycle of life, and the emotions that emerge when we lose a loved one. Streich’s drawings are simple yet evocative, with the colour and composition subtly mirroring the emotional journey and helping balance the realities of grief with a message of hope. The final brightly coloured illustration allows the story to end on a memorable, positive note. While the subject matter is sombre, there is a great sense of empathy and resilience here. The narrative encourages children to express their emotions, ask questions, and find comfort in shared human experiences. Gone is a beautifully designed and thoughtful resource that will help young readers aged 4+ navigate a potentially upsetting topic. It offers a gentle conversation starter for families and educators.
