ABR announces new editorial cadetship

The Australian Book Review (ABR) has announced the Peter Rose Editorial Cadetship to honour outgoing CEO and editor Peter Rose’s ‘extraordinary contribution to the training of publishing professionals’.

In its announcement, the ABR said the opportunity will ‘offer an aspiring editor hands-on experience in a field where entry points are increasingly rare’. Over 12 months, the chosen cadet will ‘receive extensive training in all facets of magazine publishing and the principles of editing in a supportive and collegial environment’.

Rose will step down from his position with ABR in May 2025 after 24 years of working with the magazine.

Of the new cadetship, Rose said: ‘Gaining a toehold in the world of publishing can be tricky. Once you are in, if you have the requisite talent and drive, things can happen, but penetrating that wall is the hard part. I am delighted to be associated with an editorial cadetship that will transform people’s careers. I hope that ABR readers will join me in supporting this invaluable program.’

The Peter Rose Editorial Cadetship will be the tenth ABR cadetship since 2009. The publication said: ‘ABR’s cadetship program is highly regarded in the publishing industry. Publishers recognise that ABR cadets receive high-quality editorial instruction, a hands-on introduction to a vast range of publishing tasks and platforms, experience in a lean, entrepreneurial organisation, and a strong grounding in Australia’s literary heritage and its diverse contemporary cultures.’

More information about the cadetship is available on the ABR website.
