black&write! shortlist announced

The State Library of Queensland (SLQ) has announced the shortlist for the 2025 black&write! Writing Fellowships.

The shortlisted authors are:

  • Marilyn ‘Marly’ Hooper, for the children’s novel ‘Moodu Gutta Will Get Ya’
  • Angelina Hurley, for the adult fiction novel ‘Black Beatles’
  • Joyrah Sebasio, for the poetry collection ‘Letters to Live By’
  • Mariah Sweetman, for the adult fiction novel ‘Black and White’
  • Scott Wilson, for the children’s novel ‘Dampa for Grampa’
  • KA Ren Wyld, for the adult fiction novel ‘Whichway Shimmering Dust’.

The two winners will each receive $15,000 in prize money, editorial development with the black&write! team, and a publication opportunity with University of Queensland Press. The winners will be announced on 20 May.

The black&write! Writing Fellowship runs annually and offers two fellowships to First Nations writers currently living in Australia. The program has produced 20 new published books since it began in 2011. Former winners include Sue McPherson, Jared Thomas, Nardi Simpson, and Claire G Coleman.

Last year’s winners were Meleika Gesa-Fatafehi and Lulu Houdini.
