Wombat Books launches writing prize for teens
Wombat Books has launched the Rhiza Teen Author Prize, a new competition for young aspiring authors.
Two winners will be chosen from a shortlist of four. Each shortlisted writer will receive a manuscript appraisal (worth $400), and the winners will receive an editorial mentorship with publisher Rochelle Stephens. Winners’ manuscripts will also be considered for publication.
‘What is different about the Rhiza Teen Author Prize will be that it considers a full work of fiction by a new author,’ said the publisher. ‘Category options are picture books, junior and middle-grade fiction, as well as young adult fiction.’
The judging panel for the prize is comprised of the publishing team at Wombat Books/Rhiza Edge.
Stephens said, ‘I love working with young people as a teacher and careers advisor, as well as in publishing. Putting these passions together, I am starting a new prize for teen authors who want to kickstart their career.’
Entrants need to be aged 13–19 years. There is a $25 fee to enter. Submissions are currently open and will close in January 2026.
More details are available on the Wombat Books website.
