A&U acquires Hone guide to surviving loss

Allen & Unwin (A&U) has acquired world English rights to How Will I Ever Get Through This? by Lucy Hone, in a deal brokered by Catherine Drayton at InkWell Management.

‘Grief is not confined to bereavement Yet society rarely recognises these non-death losses, leaving many feeling isolated and unseen,’ said the publisher. ‘In this deeply compassionate book, Hone draws on her own experience of multiple losses, decades of resilience research, and the voices of others navigating profound change, to offer a unique lifeline to readers.’

‘Structured around twenty key questions, How Will I Ever Get Through This? gently guides readers from initial overwhelm (Why am I so exhausted? Why am I so lonely? Who am I now?) to hopeful reengagement (What is still good in your world? Who and what do you want to live for?),’ said the publisher.

Hone is a writer, speaker, resilience researcher, and the author of Resilient Grieving (A&U). Her TED talk on living loss has been viewed over nine million times.

Publisher Sally Heath said, ‘I was immediately drawn to the idea of “living loss”, the kind of grief that rarely gets named or noticed. Dr Lucy Hone is generous in how she guides us through twenty crucial questions and leads us to appreciate the resounding positive answer to the question of the book’s title.

‘It’s the kind of book that will change lives.’

Hone said, ‘These twenty research-backed questions come from years of listening, learning, and lived experience. Some are the ones clients ask me again and again. Others are the ones I know readers need to explore in order to find their way forward. Each chapter is anchored in one of these questions, offering both insight and practical ways to navigate life’s hardest moments. I loved writing this book. It interweaves my latest research with raw, brave stories of struggle, hope, and rediscovered purpose. Living losses are everywhere, yet so often ignored. I’m on a mission to change that and bring this hidden grief out of the shadows to help people understand it better, feel better, and support others better.’

North American rights have been sold to Veronica Alvarado at Simon Element (S&S), in a deal brokered by A&U rights manager Sandra Buol. Atlantic Books/Allen & Unwin UK will publish in the United Kingdom.

A&U plans to publish How Will I Ever Get Through This? in February 2026.
