Brisbane Writers Festival releases 2025 program

Brisbane Writers Festival (BWF) has launched the full program for its 2025 festivalto be held at the new venue of Brisbane Powerhouse 9–12 October.

The program includes over 100 events and features over 200 creatives, including sessions curated by First Nations cultural curators Sharlene Allsop and Jillian Bowie.

Headlining international guests include UK historian, broadcaster and author Bettany Hughes, US actor and director Griffin Dunne, Irish economist David McWilliams, US romantasy author Callie Hart, US cultural critic Sophie Gilbert, and US author Eric Puchner.

Local guests include Helen Garner, Trent Dalton, Sally Hepworth, Michael Robotham, Di Morrissey, Anita Heiss, Craig Silvey, Andy Griffiths and Garth Nix.

Kicking off the festival will be the First Word Keynote on Thursday 9 October with Heiss delivering the opening speech, then audiences will hear from curators Bowie and Allsopp, Singaporean poet Theophilus Kwek, and BWF artistic director Jackie Ryan.

Highlights of the program include romantasy conversations with authors Hart, Stacy McEwan, Jaymin Eve, Sarah A Parker, Vanessa Len and Helen Scheurer; the launch of the Faber Writing Anthology with Pip Smith and Emily O’Grady; and a panel on Indigenous futurisms with Allanah Hunt, Mykaela Saunders, and John Morrisey, with Allsop as chair.

A schools program and sessions for families will run on 9–10 October, and includes sessions with Silvey, Griffiths, Sophie Beer, Maxine Beneba Clarke, Steph Tisdell and Amie Kaufman. The program includes a microfiction competition for young readers.
