Time to Write announces Paragraph Fellowship shortlist

Time to Write has announced the shortlist for the 2025 Paragraph Fellowship, worth $25,000.

The six shortlisted writers and the working titles of their entries are:

  • Alan Fyfe for ‘The Nine Angles’
  • Grace Chan for ‘Caretakers’
  • Jessica Au for ‘The Heron’
  • Kgshak Akec for ‘To Skin a Fish’
  • Max Easton for ‘Now, Autonomy’
  • Mykaela Saunders for ‘Last Rites of Spring’.

The fellowship, awarded to an emerging or early career writer of literary fiction, ‘aims to help writers create their next work by providing financial support to write with a view to publication’.

Nominations for the fellowship are first solicited from writers, publishers, literary agents, festival directors, editors and journalists. Once organisers confirm eligibility, the nominated writer can apply.

This year’s judges are Beejay Silcox (chair), John Kinsella and Elfie Shiosaki.

Silcox said, ‘We share this shortlist with a great deal of joy – not only because we get to celebrate these six remarkable writers, but [also] because of what they represent: a glimpse into the future of Australian fiction. And what a future it promises to be.

‘Some of these books will conjure entirely new worlds; others will burrow deep into the ones we know (or think we know). But none of them are written. Not yet. At present, the Paragraph Prize can only fund one project. But our hope is that every one of these stories finds its way into the world.’

The winner will be announced at the Emerging Writers’ Festival on 14 September at the Wheeler Centre, Melbourne.
