Bundyi acquires Lawrie’s picture book
Bundyi Publishing has acquired world rights to Bella’s Journey, a Swan Lake picture book retelling by Rowena Lawrie.
‘With themes of duality, identity, and transformation through the lens of a young brolga named Bella, this unique picture book will find its home equally at family story time, in the classroom and with health practitioners working with children discussing trauma and recovery,’ said the publisher.
Director and founder of consultancy Yamurrah, Lawrie is a mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, Aunty, cousin, community member and friend. Lawrie holds a PhD and is connected to Darkinjung Country, a descendant of Wakka Wakka and Wiradjuri nations; her matriarchal line stretches to North Leichardt River, Gulf of Carpenteria.
Lawrie said, ‘I wrote this story to celebrate the power of connection, community and relationships that support healing, safety, belonging, identity and becoming – not by leaving behind who we were, but by holding every part of our story and rising with it.’
Publisher at large Anita Heiss said, ‘When I first read Bella’s Journey, I knew we had what would become a classic read for young Australians everywhere. Rowena’s storytelling ability and her background in social work, helped her capture a story of transformation, healing and the power of community, making Bella’s Journey, an incredible read.’
Bundyi plans to publish Bella’s Journey in the second half of 2026.
