Danger Awards 2025 winners announced

Winners of the 2025 Danger Awards have been announced.

From shortlists released in August, the winners in each category are:

Debut crime fiction

  • A Town Called Treachery (Mitch Jennings, HarperCollins)

Crime fiction

  • Bone Lands (Pip Fioretti, Affirm)

Crime nonfiction

  • Black Witness (Amy McQuire, UQP)

Libby App People’s Choice

The Danger Awards recognise books featuring Australia as a setting for stories about crime and justice. The 2025 winners were announced as part of the BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival, which ran late last week. Each winner received a trophy and $1000.

Festival chair Sue Turnbull said, ‘The Danger Awards continue to celebrate the best in Australian crime writing, with all four winning books this year representing rural regions and issues.’

Last year’s winners included Amanda Hampson for The Tea Ladies (Penguin), Kerryn Mayne for Lenny Marks Gets Away with Murder (Penguin), Nick McKenzie for Crossing the Line (Hachette) and Tim Ayliffe for Killer Traitor Spy (S&S).
