A&U acquires Ham’s first nonfiction book

Allen & Unwin has acquired world rights to Look After Your Feet by Rosalie Ham, via literary agency Jenny Darling and Associates.

In this first nonfiction book, the author of The Dressmaker (Duffy & Snellgrove) shares her observations about “the unexpected advantages and indignities of getting older,” said the publisher.

Based in Melbourne, Ham is the author of 6 novels, including The Dressmaker (which was adapted into a feature film in 2015), The Dressmaker’s Secret (Picador) and Molly (Macmillan).

She said of the forthcoming work, “I find myself at a bit of a turning point. Life has been a hoot so far, and I’m amazed and proud (mostly) of what I’ve mastered and vanquished. I know that I’m well equipped to do the next bit of the adventure brilliantly. As long as my feet hold up.”

Publisher Sally Heath said, “This is a fabulous, warts-and-all look at the darkly funny experience of getting older, from Rosalie, one of Australia’s favourite authors. She has created a memorable cast of women in her 6 beloved novels, led by the inimitable Molly Dunnage [of the Dressmaker books].

“But I think Rosalie’s searingly honest observations and truths from that frontline of ageing make her[self] her greatest character yet.”

A&U plans to publish Look After Your Feet in April 2026.
