Vale Jon Bauer

Author Jon Bauer (1974–2025) has died in England, where he had lived since his return from Australia.

We were deeply saddened to hear of the recent death of Jon Bauer at the age of 51.

Jon was a talented, thoughtful, and generous writer whose critically acclaimed debut novel, Rocks in the Belly, was published by Scribe in 2011. Translation rights were sold into multiple territories, and it won the Indie Award for Best Debut Fiction, was shortlisted for the Impac Dublin Literary Award, and was longlisted for the Miles Franklin, among other accolades.

A writer who was deeply committed to his craft, Jon was, in person, extremely funny and charming, and a much-loved member of the Melbourne literary community during the years he spent living in Australia.
