Comics anthology wins Brazilian Book Published Abroad
The Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) has announced the 2025 Jabuti Award for Brazilian Book Published Abroad. The award recognises both the Brazilian publisher and the foreign publisher of a translated work.
The prize was awarded to Braba: A Brazilian Comics Anthology (“Braba: Antologia Brasileira de Quadrinhos”), edited by Janaina de Luna, illustrated by Rafael Grampá, and published by Editora Mino in Brazil and Fantagraphics Books in the US. “The stories introduce the best of contemporary Brazilian comics to the world,” said Jabuti.
Also among this year’s finalists were:
- The Curse of the Flowers (“A maldição das flores”) (Angélica Lopes, trans by Zoë Perry, Planeta do Brasil/Amazon Crossing US)
- The Pediatrician (“A pediatra”) (Andrea del Fuego, trans by Irene Anderberg, Companhia das Letras/Bokförlaget Tranan Sweden)
- Hiding Mengele: How a Nazi Network Harbored the Angel of Death (“Baviera tropical: A história de Josef Mengele, o médico nazista mais procurado do mundo, que viveu quase 20 anos no Brasil sem nunca ser pego”) (Anton Betina, Todavia Brazil/Diversion Books US)
- The Crime of the Good Nazi (“O crime do bom nazista”) (Samir Machado de Machado, Sellerio Todavia Brazil/Editore Palermo Italy).
Among other categories in the Jabuti Award, the Book of the Year award went to O Ouvidor do Brasil: 99 Vezes Tom Jobim (“The Ear of Brazil: 99 Takes on Tom Jobim”) by Ruy Castro, published by Companhia das Letras. In 99 chronicles “the author reveals the human, critical, and mordant side of the fascinating and multifaceted Tom Jobim”, said Jabuti.
Brazilian Publishers coordinator Rayanna Pereira said the category shows the value of international partnerships. “It is fundamental to recognise and highlight the partnerships made with foreign publishers. By valuing this collaborative work, we strategically strengthen the export of our titles and open new, concrete doors for national authors and publishers in the global market.”
