Majumdar named RMIT’s non/fictionLab Graphic Storyteller Fellow
RMIT has announced Soolagna Majumdar as the winner of the inaugural non/fictionLab Graphic Storyteller Fellowship for her graphic novel “Food Bird”.
Chosen from 48 applicants, Majumdar receives $15,000 in prize money, a three-week residency at RMIT’s McCraith House on the Mornington Peninsula, and a three-week residency at RMIT’s Melbourne/Naarm campus (including travel costs) with the chance to work with other creatives at the university.
Kolkata-born, Perth/Boorloo-grown comic artist Majumdar has had work featured in Vice, Cordite Press, the Westerly Magazine and the anthology Neither Here Nor Hair (Petrie Press).
Majumdar said, “Having the opportunity to hit the next milestone of my comic project during an uninterrupted period of time is beyond invaluable.”
The fellowship was developed by creative writing academics Melody Ellis, Ronnie Scott and Stayci Taylor to assist “established artists working broadly in the field of comics – graphic novel, manga, cartooning, nonfiction comics or experimental narrative art”.
RMIT associate professor Scott said, “We were inspired by the Cultural Fund’s interest in developing audiences through supporting artists in residence, and the success of established programs like the University of Tasmania’s Hedberg Writer-in-Residence Program; the essential and competitive Comic Art Workshop; and Melbourne City of Literature and Bucheon City of Literature’s comics exchange.”
More information about the residency is available on RMIT’s website.
