Meltdown (Lauren Novak, HarperCollins)
Meltdown is a heavily researched yet highly accessible examination of “mum rage”, the gendered term the book uses to describe anger experienced in motherhood, exploring why it happens and how parents can understand and manage it. Drawing on her own experiences, Lauren Novak presents a compassionate guide to understanding and working through a topic “no one talk[s] to us about […] because it’s difficult to admit.” Although structured as a cover-to-cover read, with each chapter building toward a holistic picture of why this rage occurs and how to address it, Novak’s clear and explanatory writing also allows readers to dip in and out – an important feature for new (and very busy) parents. The language is conversational without being condescending or laden with theory, making it an accessible and engaging read. Novak draws on her journalistic background to synthesise insights from psychologists, researchers and non-profit founders, weaving them together with anecdotal evidence from herself and mothers of diverse backgrounds she interviews. Meltdown explores the intersecting pressures that shape the experiences of many mothers, including those who are marginalised or parenting marginalised children. Novak writes with a clarity and warmth that feels genuinely supportive. Unfortunately, the book’s lack of gender diversity and same-sex couples undermines its otherwise comprehensive approach. Even so, Meltdown remains a valuable resource, offering much-needed support, recognition and practical explanations to new mothers and to anyone seeking to support them.
