RMIT surveys book industry professionals

RMIT academics in the Master of Writing and Publishing program are researching the impact of postgraduate writing and publishing programs on the contemporary book industry and industry futures.

As part of the project “Future-Proof: What Role Do University Writing and Publishing Programs Play in the Book Industry’s Present and Future?”, Zoe Dzunko, Sarah Gory, Angela Meyer and Tracy O’Shaughnessy are surveying industry professionals who have graduated from a postgraduate writing and publishing program in the past 5 years.

“The Australian book industry faces financial, socio-political, environmental and technological shifts and challenges. Its workforce navigates these challenges while contributing to the industry’s viability and sustainability,” according to the research abstract.

“University writing and publishing programs have become an integral part of the industry’s ecosystem, with students becoming part of the industry’s workforce. Through course case studies, interviews with industry recruiters, and graduate survey data and interviews, we assess the impact of these programs on the students, the contemporary book industry and industry futures,” said the abstract.

“Ultimately, we look at the net effect of these programs and suggest ways the book industry and university sector can continue to work together towards an equitable and sustainable future.”

The survey form is available on the project webpage.
