Australian Poetry appoints Bufton as CEO and publisher
Australia’s peak poetry body, Australian Poetry, has appointed Melinda Bufton as its new CEO and publisher.
Bufton is an experienced leader and poet, according to Australian Poetry. “She has worked extensively in higher education, with a focus on program development and leading cross-institutional collaborations. Within the poetry world she is involved in not-for-profit literature education (via the Melbourne School of Literature) mentoring and has consulted in arts career advisory services for emerging writers. In her own poetry practice, she is the author of three collections and has been published and anthologised widely.”
On joining Australian Poetry, Bufton said, “My enthusiasm for how poetry is experienced, read and created underpins all that I do. Poetry is so exciting, networked and alive in Australia; I cannot wait to see what can be grown and created next.”
Bufton will join Australian Poetry on 23 March 2026. She takes over from Jacinta Le Plastrier, who has been in the position since 2014.
