The Friendship Paradox (Aśka, A&U Children’s)
The Friendship Paradox is a heartwarming YA graphic novel by author and artist Aśka (Stars in Their Eyes) about personal growth and friendship, with accessible science concepts sprinkled throughout. The story follows Dash, a self-described “friendship singularity”, during their gap-year internship at the Pop Science Hub, a fictional science centre that delivers science shows to schools across the country. As an introverted member of a migrant family, Dash has always struggled to make friends. But with their father’s encouragement, they’re determined to step outside their comfort zone, develop new relationships and make the most of the opportunity. To survive a gruelling tour around Western Australia with the Pop Up Rovers, Dash must confront their anxieties, learn to work with people with different personalities and maybe even make a friend along the way. Beyond its approachable introduction to basic scientific theory, The Friendship Paradox also explores mental health and its impact on the people around us. Dash’s teammate, Kay, is reluctant to go on tour following her sister’s recent suicide attempt, while balancing her responsibilities as her sister’s primary carer. On the road, as Kay opens up to Dash about her struggles, the two bond over their shared love of science. Filled with vibrant colours and expressive characters, The Friendship Paradox is a colourful journey of self-discovery and friendship. Best suited to readers aged 13 and over who are developing an interest in science.
