MidnightSun announces inaugural Picture Book Prize shortlist

MidnightSun Publishing has announced the shortlist for its inaugural picture book prize.

Shortlisted works are:

  • “An Excellent Hat” (Linda Brucesmith)
  • “The Tinker’s Light” (Ashling Kwok)
  • “The Battle of the Beast” (Penny O’Loughlin)
  • “The Lost Thoughts” (Katy Rogers).

Publishing director Anna Solding said, “I was stunned, not only by how many writers submitted to the prize, but by the standard of entries.”

“There is an astounding array of talented and bold writers for young people out there.”

Announced late last year, the MidnightSun Picture Book Prize is intended “to seek out fresh work from emerging and established picture book writers across Australia”. The inaugural winner is set to be announced in March, receiving a contract with the publisher.

Solding also confirmed that MidnightSun intends to run the prize again in 2027.
