Cannon leaves Monash University Publishing
Senior marketing coordinator Sarah Cannon is leaving Monash University Publishing after 21 years.
Cannon, who has 35 years’ experience in publishing, joined Monash at the press’s inception in 2004.
“Since that time,” said publisher Julia Carlomagno, “she has been integral to its growth from a small operation to a book-publishing company with a list of 30 books per year.
“Over the years, Sarah has worn many hats and overseen many tasks, from marketing to sales to publicity, bringing to all her characteristic good humour.”
Cannon began her publishing career at DW Thorpe, which was then the publisher of Books+Publishing (B+P). After a spell in Crete, Sarah managed the Thesaurus Bookshop in Brighton and then became senior marketing manager (academic) at Cambridge University Press (from which time arose this 1999 B+P Q&A).
During her time at Cambridge University Press, Cannon served on the board of the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize. Later, from 2020 to 2024, she was also a board member of the Small Press Network.
“Sarah is a positive, inspiring presence to all who work with her,” said Carlomagno. “She’s been a trusted adviser – and friend – to many authors, along with dozens within and beyond the Monash community. Her passion for books and culture, and her indefatigable enthusiasm to promote authors, is joyous to witness.
“It’s time for adventures of a different kind, marked by more memories with family and friends, good food and tending to her gorgeous garden.”
Cannon’s last day with the publisher is today, 3 March.
