QUT appoints Hay as “Meanjin” establishing editor
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has appointed Ashley Hay in the role of establishing editor of Meanjin.
Hay is a former editor of the Griffith Review and is also an author.
QUT said, “Hay will guide Meanjin’s transition to its new home over the next 12 months. In addition to overseeing publication of new writing, she will help establish the journal’s ongoing operations and support recruitment of a permanent editor.”
“There’s an extraordinary privilege in being invited to help establish a well-known and highly regarded journal in a new home,” said Hay. “We’re looking forward to being back in touch with Meanjin’s readers and writers, and to re-establishing partnerships while we build new connections and opportunities as well.”
In the announcement of the appointment, QUT also said that Meanjin is set to resume online publication “later this year”, with an 85th print edition slated for late in the year. “QUT is currently establishing Meanjin’s editorial advisory board and broader governance structures, with further announcements expected in coming months,” the university added.
QUT became the new custodian of the literary journal in February this year, following the University of Melbourne’s decision to withdraw funding late last year, which had led to the closure of the publication on financial grounds.
Recruitment for a permanent editor in the new location is planned to follow, with an appointment “anticipated before the end of 2026”.
