Bookshop.org revenue up 55%

In the US, online bookselling site Bookshop.org has reported its 2025 revenue is up 55% compared to the previous year, reports Publishers Weekly (PW).

Revenue in 2025 for the platform, which distributes 10% of all profits to participating bookstores, was just under US$70 million (A$98m). This meant a record total of US$9.5m (A$13.3m) was distributed to bookstores.

Meanwhile, CEO Andy Hunter told PW of ambitions for continued growth, stating a desired annual revenue of US$100m (A$140m).

Hunter attributed the platform’s trajectory to its broadening customer base.

“Romance, for example, has become a top-three sales category nearly every month – a significant shift from 2020 and 2021, when it barely registered,” Hunter told PW. “And serious nonfiction and literary fiction remain strong, in opposition to the broader market trend.” Mystery and thriller readers are the next target demographic, he noted.

PW reported that since it launched, Bookshop.org has paid out more than US$46m (A$64.4m) to bookstores.
