Wombat acquires Dangerfield’s middle-grade novel

Wombat Books has acquired world rights to The Misspelled Sky by Lucy Dangerfield following a pitch at last year’s CYA Conference.

The speculative middle-grade novel follows Megana, who “always believed she was special”, said the publisher. “She’s allowed to learn to write, and her writing literally makes magic! But her prized book of magical spellings is stolen, and as she tries to get it back, she falls into the company of people she’s always avoided – misfits and oddballs, writers of different kinds.”

To not only recover her spelling book but also defend her home, Megana must open her eyes to new ideas and soften her heart.

Dangerfield said, “Megana comes from a proud upper class. That makes her a challenging character to write. But I love the way she follows her curiosity and is willing to grow. When she humbles herself to learn, she discovers the world is both more complicated and more beautiful than she realised.”

The publisher said, “Lucy Dangerfield loves stories and language and is thrilled to be chasing her childhood dream of writing magical adventures for the young and young at heart. A fascination with words has coloured every part of her life, from her work as a Hansard reporter to her enjoyment of public speaking. She’s South Aussie to the core but loves to travel, including a stint in Canada to study creative writing at the University of Toronto.”

The Misspelled Sky has an estimated release date of April 2027.
