LIANZA Children’s Book Awards 2012 winners announced

The winners of the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) Children’s Book Awards for 2012 were announced in Wellington, New Zealand, on 6 July.

The winners, chosen from more than 110 nominations, were:

Junior Fiction Award – Esther Glen Medal
The Travelling Restaurant (Barbara Else, Gecko Press)

Young Adult Fiction Award
Pyre of Queens (David Hair, Penguin NZ)

Illustration Award – Russell Clark Award
Rāhui (Chris Szekely & Malcolm Ross, Huia)

Nonfiction Award – Elsie Locke Medal
Nice Day for a War (Chris Slane & Matt Elliott, illus by Chris Slane, HarperCollins Publishers NZ)

Te Kura Pounamu (te reo Māori)
Ngā Taniwha i te-Whanga-nui-a-Tara (Moira Wairama & Bruce Potter, Penguin NZ)

Librarians’ Choice Award
Rāhui (Chris Szekely & Malcolm Ross, Huia).

The Te Ropu Whakahau (organisation for Māori Librarians) Award Winners are:

Te Tohu Taurapa for te wahanga pikitia (picture book)
Ngā Taniwha i te Whanga-nui-a-Tara (Moira Wairama & Bruce Potter, Penguin NZ)

Te Tohu Ngā Kete e toru for te wahanga pukapuka paki (fiction)
Te Poiwhana (Te Kauhoe Wano & Andrew Burdan, Huia)

Te Tohu Pounamu
Kei Wareware tātou (Feana Tu’akoi, trans by the late Katerina Mataira, illus by Elspeth Alix Batt, Scholastic)

The Te Tohu Hoani Te Whatuhoro/Jury for te wahanga pukapuka pono (nonfiction) Award was not awarded due to lack of entries.
