Tiffany, Womersley shortlisted for BBC International Short Story Prize

Australian authors Carrie Tiffany and Chris Womersley have been shortlisted for the 2012 BBC Short Story Prize, which was opened up to international entries this year to celebrate the 2012 Olympics.

Tiffany’s story ‘Before He Left the Family’ and Womersley’s story ‘A Lovely and Terrible Thing’ are among 10 shortlisted stories in the running for the £15,000 (approximately A$23,000) prize. M J Hyland, who previously lived in Australia, has also been shortlisted for her story ‘Even Pretty Eyes Commit Crimes’. To see the full shortlist, click here.

The winner of this year’s prize will be announced on 2 October. Starting this week, each of the 10 shortlisted stories will be broadcast on BBC Radio.

As previously reported by Bookseller+Publisher, the number of stories on the shortlist increased from five to 10 this year, which the BBC said reflects ‘the global breadth and ambitions of the 2012 award’. This year’s award was open to writers anywhere in the world who write in English and who have been published in the UK.
