Leading Edge Books NZ to close in December

Leading Edge Books has announced that it will close its New Zealand Books Group at the end of the year.

Leading Edge Books general manager Simon Milne said in a statement that the New Zealand business, which currently supports 19 independent bookstores, will close after Christmas. ‘We have had a wonderful five years working with booksellers and publishers in New Zealand,’ said Milne. ‘However, with a declining membership base the New Zealand Books Group is no longer viable.

Leading Edge Books established operations in New Zealand in 2007. The Leading Edge Group recently announced that the Books Group in Australia will ‘report into a newly created Entertainment Group’, which will include books, music and video. The change will be accompanied by a new management structure, which will be established following Milne’s departure in November. Milne is leaving Leading Edge to take up the newly created role of marketing communications director at HarperCollins Australia.

Leading Edge Books currently represents 198 independent bookstores in Australia.
