The Co-op Bookshop rebrands as The Co-op

The Co-op Bookshop has rebranded with the name The Co-op and a new logo.

In a blog post, the retailer said that the rebranding ‘heralds a whole new era and better reflects what we do’. ‘Back in 1958, the students who founded us just wanted a cheaper way to get textbooks. Now, of course, we sell backpacks, headphones, picnic baskets, stationery, clothing, audio, software—you name it! Certainly a lot more than just books. So, the word “Bookshop” just didn’t fit comfortably with the great choice of products we now offer.’

The Co-op updated its website, Twitter and Facebook pages this week with the new name and logo. The new branding is expected to be rolled out in Co-op stores across the country in time for the start of the 2013 university year.

The Co-op said in a statement that the rebranding ‘forms part of the organisation’s first official rebrand since it was established fifty-five years ago’ and reflects the retailer’s ‘dedication to successfully adapt to meeting the changing needs of its 1.66 million members’. Co-op CEO Peter Knock added that ‘the introduction of new products and services’ will allow the retailer to be seen as ‘the most dynamic and enterprising member-owned retailer in the country’.

The Co-op is Australia’s largest campus retailer with 52 stores nationwide. The retailer recently expanded to include stores at Victoria University.
