Sydney’s first beach library launches in Coogee

More than 1000 books and magazines are available to beachgoers in Coogee through Sydney’s first free beach library, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The Coogee Beach Library, which launched on 1 December, features a six-metre-long freestanding timber bookshelf located on the lower promenade, and stocks novels, nonfiction, children’s books and foreign-language books. Although library cards are not a requirement, borrowers are expected to return the books when they’re finished.

Randwick mayor Ted Seng said: ‘I am excited to be opening our unofficial fourth library in Randwick City, and a unique one at that. Imagine if the Coogee Beach Library is able to encourage even just one child to pick up a book and discover the joy of reading, then this project will be well worth it.’

The Coogee Beach Library will be open during lifeguard patrol hours of 7am to 7pm until the end of February 2015.
