Gallipoli diary transcribed by WA state library

The war diary of WA soldier Captain Beresford Everett Bardwell is being transcribed by the State Library of Western Australia with help from volunteers, reports PerthNow.

One of the first Australians to enlist in the war, Bardwell wrote about his experiences on the front line, including the Gallipoli landing. ‘I thought it was time to shoot when a bullet landed just under my chin,’ he wrote.

Bardwell’s grandson loaned the diary to the library after previously meeting with curators to identify his grandfather in a photo from the library’s collection.

The diary can be viewed in facsimile on the library’s website.
