On tour: Meet the author James Patterson

James Patterson is the bestselling author of the ‘Alex Cross’ and ‘Women’s Murder Club’ series, among many others. His latest book is Rafe’s Aussie Adventure (with Martin Chatterton, Random House) from his ‘Middle School’ series for children. He will be travelling to Melbourne and Sydney in the first week of May.

What would you put on a shelf-talker for your book?
‘Whatever you do, don’t read this book.’ Actually my publisher has done a shelf-talker. They put on it: ‘Laugh-out-loud funny with a few serious bits.’ That’s probably better.

What are you reading right now?
The ‘Mort’ series by Martin Chatterton (Random House). Martin and I wrote Middle School: Rafe’s Aussie Adventure together so I know he’s got a wicked sense of humour. I also recently enjoyed In the Kingdom of Ice by Hampton Sides (Oneworld) and The Silkworm by J K Rowling (Sphere). She’s a terrific writer.

What are you planning to read next?
Two Wolves by Tristan Bancks (Random House).

Which book do you always recommend?
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.

What was the defining book of your childhood?
Peter Pan (J M Barrie).

If you were a literary character you’d be …
Peter Pan. I loved Peter Pan.

What’s your favourite book adaptation (film, television or theatre)?
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was a sad, wonderful movie. Great direction, acting and storytelling. Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley was an excellent adaptation. I really enjoyed it. I consider Pride and Prejudice one of the best books ever written.

Hardback, paperback or digital?
I don’t think it matters what format people read just as long as they are reading.

Facebook or Twitter?
Both.

In 50 years’ time books will be …
Still all about the stories.
