Proposed rooftop bar, restaurant for redeveloped NSW state library

A rooftop bar and restaurant at the State Library of New South Wales (SLNSW) have been proposed as part a rejuvenation of some of Macquarie Street’s famous heritage buildings, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The proposed rooftop bar, modelled on one at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as a function centre and restaurant, would have views of the Botanic Gardens, the Opera House and Lady Macquarie’s Chair. Part of the planned redevelopment of the Mitchell Library, it would be completed as early as 2018.

Property minister Dominic Perrottet told the Telegraph that the government wants to ‘create iconic locations for people to enjoy’. ‘Over time much of the heritage has become locked away, suffocated and hidden in plain sight … our history deserves better,’ said Perrottet.

Other heritage buildings on Macquarie Street including Hyde Park Barracks (1817), NSW Parliament (1811), Sydney Hospital (1869), the original Mint building (1811) and the Land and Property Information building (1908).
