NSW Librarian made AM in Australia Day honours

Jan Richards, the manager of Central West Libraries in rural NSW, has been made a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for ‘significant service to library and information management through executive roles with professional associations’.

Richard has managed Central West Libraries since 1995, and was librarian for New South Wales Agriculture and at Wollongong City Library prior to that. She is also chair of the Australian Library and Information Association’s (ALIA) Australian Public Library Alliance, and a previous president and vice-president; past secretary of the Country Public Libraries Association; and has held positions at the Library Council of New South Wales and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.

Richards told the Central Western Daily she started working at Orange’s library in 1972 after leaving school. ‘It was a matter of serendipity because I was going to go into nursing and my parents weren’t keen,’ said Richards. ‘By the third day, I said I wasn’t going to be a nurse.’
