Volunteer-run library ‘agencies’ replace mobile service around Bendigo

The Goldfields Library Corporation in regional Victoria has opened the first of seven new volunteer-run library agencies, which will replace its mobile library service, reports the Bendigo Advertiser.

The Dingee service is run by the local branch of the Country Women’s Association, who reported ‘quite a lot of people borrowed books’. ‘It’s been great that we have been able to retain library services that were in Dingee and surrounding areas,’ said branch secretary Dianna Linton. ‘And we are able to expand on that service as well. We can provide extra hours that weren’t available when the bus came through.’

The six other agencies will be opened in coming weeks as the Goldfields Libraries ensure ‘systems were working and volunteers and staff had a chance to bed down operations’.

Residents had previously told the Bendigo Advertiser they were concerned that replacing the mobile library vans ‘could erode service in regional areas’.
