State Library of NSW to cease on-demand lending collection service

The State Library of NSW will cease its on-demand lending collection service, which circulates 80,000 items include LOTE and alternative format titles to NSW public libraries, in favour of making the collections available on long-term loan.

The library said the new model will reduce the State Library’s handling and freight costs, and ‘result in more collection items being available in public libraries for use by local communities’.

The Kiama Independent reports that resident Machteld Hali uses the service to receive a box with 30 books every three months. ‘It’s the most wonderful service, it’s my connection, a lifeline to my previous culture,’ said Hali. ‘Apparently there are half a dozen or so people in Kiama who use this service and they are all very much tied to this, it is very important to them.’

Libraries will be asked to express their interest in requesting certain collections. For more information, click here.
