WA ‘Better Beginnings’ literacy program honoured at Library of Congress awards

The WA state government’s Better Beginnings literacy program has been awarded a Best Practice Honoree recognition at the 2017 Library of Congress Literacy Awards.

Since 2004, the Better Beginnings program has provided more than 550,000 families with developmentally appropriate books and resources, as well as access to ‘Rhyme Time’ and ‘Story Time’ sessions at local libraries.

The award recognizes best practice in literacy provision, and comes with a prize of US$5000 (A$6230). The program will be profiled in the Library of Congress Literacy Awards publication distributed to 1750 international literacy organisations and educators.

The program is delivered by the State Library of WA with ongoing evaluation conducted by Edith Cowan University.
