Vandalised street library rebuilt

A Canberra street library that was destroyed by vandals in late July has been rebuilt by the local community, reports the Age.

The Lyneham and O’Connor Little Library was set on fire, after being in operation for over a year in a previously ‘unloved’ area near a bike path.

Library founder Tim Hollo said that while it was difficult to understand why someone would destroy the books, he was delighted at the response of Canberrans.

‘Neighbours, friends, and concerned people from all over tidied up the mess and brought in two new libraries, which are already full of wonderful new books for people to borrow, read, swap, talk about, and come together around,’ said Hollo.

‘I’ve been overwhelmed by calls, emails, tweets and Facebook messages, offering books, support, ideas, and more. Canberra’s beautiful, resilient, vibrant, sharing community has outdone itself,’ he said.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, the first two Little Libraries were opened in Canberra in 2015.
