Robinson awarded 2020 Ondaatje Prize for ‘A Portable Paradise’
In the UK, Roger Robinson has won the £10,000 (A$19,250) Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje Prize for his poetry collection A Portable Paradise (Peepal Tree Press).
‘The spirit of place in this outstanding collection is the portable paradise of Trinidad in London,’ said prize judge and previous winner Pascale Petit. ‘Roger Robinson’s profoundly moving book manages to balance anger and love, rage and craft. Every poem surprises with its imagery, emotional intensity and lyric power.’
This year’s judging panel, which also included Peter Frankopan and Australian author Evie Wyld, chose the winner from a shortlist of six announced in April.
Now in its 16th year, the annual prize is awarded for ‘a distinguished work of fiction, nonfiction or poetry, evoking the spirit of a place’.
