BWF appoints Runcie as CEO, confirms festival will run in May 2021

Brisbane Writers Festival (BWF) has appointed Sarah Runcie as CEO and confirmed the festival will run in May 2021.

Runcie, formerly strategy and policy manager at the Australian Publishers Association, said her first task as CEO would be to open a digital dialogue with Brisbane residents to better reflect and respond to their expectations. ‘I want to know what the people of Brisbane want from their writers festival. I want to reflect the diversity of our Brisbane audiences through the diversity of the writers we present,’ she said in a statement.

Runcie said she looks forward to ‘expanding Brisbane Writers Festival to encompass storytelling in all its variations, traditions and connections’.

BWF board chair Fiona Taylor said Runcie comes to the festival ‘with fresh eyes and ears and a swag of impressive strategies and ideas to ensure its success will continue to grow’.

‘Particularly, she is committed to further developing and expanding the digital programs and creative opportunities that evolved from our response to Covid-19 shutdowns,’ said Taylor.

As previously reported, while the 2020 Festival will not go ahead due to Covid-19, BWF will run a series of online offerings in the first week of September under the theme ‘Room to Dream’, with funding from the Copyright Agency’s Covid-19 emergency funding.
