Folio Prize 2022 shortlist announced

In the UK, the shortlist for the £30,000 (A$57,000) Rathbones Folio Prize has been announced.

The eight shortlisted titles are:

  • Assembly (Natasha Brown, Hamish Hamilton)
  • The Promise (Damon Galgut, Chatto & Windus)
  • Men Who Feed Pigeons (Selima Hill, Bloodaxe)
  • Albert and the Whale (Philip Hoare, Fourth Estate)
  • Small Things Like These (Claire Keegan, Faber)
  • My Phantoms (Gwendoline Riley, Granta)
  • China Room (Sunjeev Sahota, Harvill Secker)
  • The Magician (Colm Tóibín, Viking).

All the books considered for the prize are nominated by the Folio Academy, an international group of writers and critics, and the award is open to any English-language book regardless of form. This year’s shortlist comprises six novels, one poetry collection (Men Who Feed Pigeons)  and one work of nonfiction (Albert and the Whale). Last year, American writer Carmen Maria Machado won the prize for her memoir In the Dream House (Serpent’s Tail).

The 2022 winner will be announced at a ceremony at the British Library on 23 March. For more information about the prize, see the Folio Prize website.
