Project editor

We are looking for an editor to join us to work across our illustrated and narrative books as a project editor. Genres will include food and drink, lifestyle, memoir, health and wellbeing, biography, current affairs and sport.

Reporting to the head of editorial, you will oversee the editorial process for individual titles, from manuscript through to print, and work closely with the publisher to bring the book from idea to finished copy.

You’ll be just as comfortable editing, proofreading and writing copy as you are maintaining schedules and budgets, or assisting with design briefs and photoshoots. You’ll be a natural at author care and working with freelancers. Someone who loves the process of working with a range of authors and creatives, adapting schedules and working with the wider production and design team will be ideal.

You must have at least three years’ editorial experience, including in-house, be confident managing multiple titles, and have an understanding of every aspect of book production.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Impeccable organisational and editorial skills
  • Good creative judgement
  • The drive to maintain high editorial standards and work well within a team
  • You will love words but equally be excited by innovative design and illustrated titles
  • A working knowledge of Adobe Creative suite, particularly InDesign, is strongly preferred
  • Experience working on illustrated books and/or cookbook is preferred but not essential.

Graphics coordinator

Do you love books, design, layout and typography? Are you keen to work as part of a team on the delivery of Hardie Grant Books projects?

Reporting to the design manager, you will support the team across a range of design and administrative tasks including:

  • Assisting with the prepress and proofing process
  • Ensuring design files are setup correctly for print and adhering to the Hardie Grant style guide
  • Maintaining and managing databases
  • Ad-hoc design jobs and general support to the design manager and wider department.

Our ideal candidate will be a creative team player who brings a mix of artistic and technical knowledge to the role and wants to join a collaborative publishing group. You will have a keen eye for design and a willingness to learn while working on a diverse range of book projects.

The deal candidate will have:

  • 1–2 years’ experience in a publishing or agency setting
  • A solid understanding of the fundamental principles of design, including typography, layout, and colour
  • An advanced understanding of and technical ability in the Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and AcrobatPro (Photoshop and Illustrator skills are well regarded)
  • Typesetting skills, with a general understanding of how to setup a file for publication design.
  • The ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, take direction and follow briefs
  • A general understanding of 4c print, prepress and production
  • Strong file management and organisation skills, as well as superior attention to detail.
