BWF 2023 program announced

The program for this year’s Brisbane Writers Festival (BWF), which runs 10–14 May, has been announced.

This year’s festival is the first under new artistic director Jackie Ryan, who took over from Sarah Runcie after two years as CEO.

Comprising over 100 events, the 61st BWF will open with a keynote by First Nations poet and political activist Lionel Fogarty and will be closed by Alexis Wright with a speech exploring apocalypse and creation. International guests include British author Irvine Welsh, recent Booker Prize winner Shehan Karunatilaka and South Korean writer Bora Chung, launching the Country of Focus program, which this year focuses on South Korea.

Local authors appearing at the festival include Trent Dalton, Stan Grant, Grace Tame, Brooke Blurton and Bryan Brown. The Love YA day on Saturday, 13 May features writers including Nova Weetman, Danielle Binks, Vanessa Len and Will Kostakis.

In the second year BWF has engaged curators to build the program, this year’s festival is curated by First Nations curators Daniel Browning and Samantha Faulkner, country of focus curator Sune-Ae Lee, Love YA curator Karen Lee, families and Word Play curator Megan Daley and Brisbane stories curator Matthew Condon.
