Ganner awarded 2025 Janet Mackenzie Medal
The Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) announced Julie Ganner as the winner of its 2025 Janet Mackenzie Medal.
Ganner has worked in the editing and publishing industry for over 35 years, with a focus on ‘raising awareness, both within Australia and internationally, of the need for accessible and inclusive publications for readers with print disability’. She is the co-author of Books Without Barriers: A Practical Guide to Inclusive Publishing and Inclusive Publishing in Australia: An Introductory Guide.
IPEd CEO Karen Lee said: ‘Julie Ganner embodies the values at the heart of IPEd: excellence, integrity, and a commitment to meaningful change. Her work has transformed how we think about accessibility and inclusivity in publishing, and her generosity in sharing knowledge has uplifted countless editors and publishing professionals.’
Ganner said: ‘For me, the most exciting aspect of the award is its implicit recognition of the ongoing work my colleagues and I are doing to promote the importance of editing for accessibility, and of inclusive publishing in general. Our aim is to make the correction of accessibility issues as much a standard part of every editor’s professional practice as correcting language and grammar issues is. My hope is that this award will help us achieve that aim.’
The Janet Mackenzie Medal is named for Janet Mackenzie (1947–2018), a founding member of Editors Victoria, who also worked within the first Standards Working Group and Style Manual 7th Edition Steering Group. The medal is awarded to ‘an outstanding professional editor who has lifted the standard of the editing profession and/or given exemplary service to IPEd,’ said the organisation.
There was no winner announced in 2024, and the 2023 winner was Kerry Davies.
More information about the award is available on the IPEd website.
