Melbourne Rare Book Week program announced

Rare Books Melbourne has announced the 2025 program for the Melbourne Rare Book Week, running 24 July to 2 August across Melbourne.

The program, which ‘celebrates the rich tradition and culture of rare and collectible books’, includes 43 free events. Talks and lectures will cover topics including: significant women in the natural sciences; the English Civil War and history of free speech; balladeers singing the news in premodern times; the evolution of medicine from witchcraft to science; and Australia’s first woman crime writer.

The Melbourne Rare Book Fair, described as ‘the largest rare book fair in the Southern Hemisphere and Australasia’, will be held in Wilson Hall from 31 July to 2 August. Exhibitions will include the Grand Tour at the University of Melbourne and the World of the Book at State Library Victoria.

Rare Books Melbourne president Mike O’Brien said the program ‘showcases the extraordinary literary heritage in our city’. He said: ‘We are proud to offer a feast of lectures, talks, events, and exhibitions, that celebrate and explore the rich collections and amazing expertise that Melbourne, a UNESCO City of Literature, has to offer.’
