Australian Political Book of the Year 2025 longlist announced

The 2025 longlist for the Australian Political Book of the Year has been announced.

Longlisted titles are:

  • The Assassination of Neville Wran (Milton Cockburn, Connor Court)
  • Broken Heart: A True History of the Voice Referendum (Shireen Morris, La Trobe)
  • The Chairman’s Lounge (Joe Aston, Scribner)
  • Let’s Tax Carbon (Ross Garnaut, La Trobe)
  • Losing It (Jess Hill, Quarterly Essay)
  • Mean Streak (Rick Morton, Fourth Estate)
  • The Men Who Killed the News (Eric Beecher, Scribner)
  • Näku Dhäruk: The Bark Petitions (Clare Wright, Text)
  • Nuked (Andrew Fowler, Melbourne University Press)
  • Politics, Pride and Perversion (Erik Eklund, ANU Press).

The award is presented for ‘the most compelling contribution to the understanding of Australian political events and debates’. The winner will receive $15,000, while each shortlisted author will receive $1000.

This year’s shortlist will be announced during an event at the Wheeler Centre on 8 September, with 2024 Australian Political Book of the Year winner Chris Masters revisiting winning title Flawed Hero (A&U) with journalist Michael Bachelard.
