Upswell acquires Curtin novel

Upswell Publishing has acquired world rights to Six Days by Amanda Curtin.

“Six Days creates a character in Daniel, an expat Australian who has lived in Paris for longer than anywhere else and spends his days pondering his life and mistakes walking the streets with his old dog,” said the publisher. “The novel’s 6-day narrative, set in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the winter of 2012, expands into lifetimes, histories, as interconnecting stories weave through Daniel’s.

“Stories of abandonment and fractured families, rape and coercion, addiction, ambition, loss and grief, are told in moments and set within the context of war and occupation, the revolutionary 60s, riots in a Catalan town in the south of France, a grassroots movement to make visible the invisible homeless [people]. The personal [is] stitched into, and inseparable from, the political.”

Curtin is the author of novels Elemental and The Sinkings, and a short story collection, Inherited (all UWA Publishing). Elemental was shortlisted in the 2014 WA Premier’s Book Awards. Her short fiction has been published in the journals Griffith ReviewSoutherlyIsland, Indigo, Westerly and Review of Australian Fiction. Curtin has also worked in publishing for more than 25 years as a freelance book editor and has a PhD in writing.

Publisher Terri-ann White said, “I haven’t published fiction at Upswell since 2023, as I haven’t been able to find writing that knocked me sideways. Until now. Amanda Curtin has written an exceptional novel, and I am so delighted to restore our connection that started with Amanda’s first 2 novels and one short story collection during my time at UWA Publishing.”

Curtin said, “It’s a joy to be working with Terri-ann again, and I’m looking forward to seeing Six Days published under the Upswell imprint.”

Upswell plans to release Six Days in August 2026.
