Beveridge receives lifetime achievement award
Poet Judith Beveridge has been named one of this year’s recipients of Creative Australia Awards for Lifetime Achievement.
Born in London in 1956, Beveridge moved to Sydney in 1960. Her first book, The Domesticity of Giraffes (Black Lightning Press), was published in 1987. She has since published seven volumes. Sun Music: New and Selected Poems (Giramondo, 2018) won the Prime Minister’s Award for Poetry in 2019 and her poem “Two Houses” won the $10,000 Australian Catholic University Prize for Poetry.
Beveridge taught poetry writing for 16 years at Sydney University and was the poetry editor of Meanjin for 10 years. Her most recent book is Tintinnabulum (Giramondo, 2024).
Referring to 12 recipients across a range of creative arts, Creative Australia CEO Adrian Collette said, “These artists are bold, visionary and deeply connected to community. Whether redefining their artform or amplifying voices too often unheard, their work reminds us of the transformative power of creativity in Australian life.”
The recipients were announced at a ceremony at the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art.
