A&U acquires third Rose McHugh Mystery novel

Allen & Unwin (A&U) has acquired world rights to Murder at Thornwood Park, the third book in Joan Sauers’s Rose McHugh Mystery series.

Murder at Thornwood Park is “for readers who love their cosy crime with an edge,” according to the publisher.

“Set within an intriguing village community of friends, neighbours (and enemies), all living at the edge of a moody, atmospheric forest, historian-turned-detective Rose McHugh channels her expert skills to solve an historical series of murders. One missing woman becomes 2 as Rose realises she’s dealing with a serial killer who committed the crimes when a local hotel housed women trainees of the WAAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force). Unearthing a cold case with few leads is a challenge, particularly when there is someone in the village who does not want the truth aired.”

Sauers is a screenwriter, producer and author who worked in London, Los Angeles and New York before settling in Australia. She has lectured in screenwriting in Sydney, London, Paris, Berlin and Casablanca and has written for television including Heartbreak High, Wakefield and Ladies in Black. Her two previous cosy crime novels featuring Rose McHugh are Echo Lake and Whisky Valley (both A&U).

Sauers said, “It was such fun to return to my favourite characters and their witty banter, while exploring the rarefied, ruthless world of estate sales and auction houses. And of course I loved writing that most irresistible feature of crime novels: the serial-killer story.”

A&U publisher Annette Barlow said, “Rose McHugh has become a beloved character with whom so many readers will identify as she finds herself in the middle of this long-forgotten cold case. A little bit of Phryne Fisher, a little bit of Richard Osman and a dash of Midsomer Murders village charm. A complete delight!”

A&U plans to publish Murder at Thornwood Park in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand in June 2026.
